About Alexandria, LA

Alexandria, one of the larger cities in the state of Louisiana, is the seat of Rapides Parish. It sits on the bank of the Red River, with the smaller city of Pineville on the other side. Alexandria was first incorporated in 1818 as a town, and then later as a city almost fifteen years later. It is home to historic buildings and museums, though is perhaps most recognized for its events, such as the Mardi Gras parade.

The population of Alexandria, as of 2021, was just under 45,000 people. This makes the city the ninth-largest in the state.

Discover Alexandria Real Estate

The city, located almost in the exact center of Louisiana, has a real estate market that is more affordably priced than some of the larger cities. However, like many other areas across the country, real estate prices have seen an increase, even in comparison to last year. Alexandria does offer a wide range of price points, including everything from starter homes to luxury properties.

Real estate in Alexandria is primarily single-family homes, with some multi-family properties scarred around the city. For those searching for opportunities to build their dream home, there are also numerous opportunities to own vacant lots and land. As well, Alexandria has many commercial properties available for sale. The city has many small neighborhoods, but some of the larger, more significant ones include the Downtown and Lower Third districts. The Garden District, one of the most desirable in the city, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Single-family homes across the many Alexandria neighborhoods are primarily bungalows built in the Ranch or Farmhouse styles. Within the historic districts, home style varies, and includes Craftsman and Colonial Revival architecture. Many of the homes for sale in Alexandria have been built before the year 1950, so there are plenty of opportunities to own a home with charm and character. Not all of these homes have been recently updated, but there is a lot of choice for those who want something more modern and move-in ready, and those interested in an excellent investment.

Square footage also ranges. In general, the older bungalows tend to be on the smaller side, but these are often located in some of the most desirable neighborhoods, close to the city’s amenities. The Garden District, as example, does have a number of large, historic estates, which are exceptional options for homebuyers looking for luxury living at competitive prices.

Alexandria, LA Highlights & Amenities

The Downtown District of Alexandria is located right on the riverfront. It features a significant portion of preserved, historic buildings, which include The Hotel Bentley of Alexandria (built 1908). Unique boutiques and local restaurants are found in this area of the city, but other highlights include the Randolph Riverfront Center, the Alexandria Riverfront Amphitheater, and the Alexandria Museum of Art.

In the downtown’s east end, the Coughlin Saunders Performing Arts Center, the Louisiana History Museum, and the River Oaks Square Arts Center are points of interest. This is also where a selection of historic homes still stand, including the James Wade Bolton House and the Bland House. Both of these are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Outside of the downtown is a mixture of both residential and commercial areas. The Alexandria Mall offers a wide range of chain stores and restaurants, as well as a grocery store and a movie theater. The Alexandria Zoological Park is one of the major attractions of the city. In regards to events and festivals, Alexandria draws a big crowd from around Central Louisiana for Mardi Gras, but it also hosts spring (Alex River Fête) and winter (Alex Winter Fête) festivals.
