How do I sell my Northwest Louisiana home if I have indoor pets?

Selling a home can feel stressful, especially when pets are involved. But the right plan makes all the difference

Many sellers worry about smells. Louisiana humidity can make pet odors stronger. A deep clean is the first step. That means carpets, rugs, furniture, baseboards, and even air vents. Sometimes professional carpet cleaning or HVAC service is worth it. Fresh, clean air works better than heavy air sprays. Buyers want neutral — not perfume.

Another common question is where pets should go during showings. It’s best to remove them from the home. A friend, daycare, boarding, or even a long walk works well. This keeps pets safe and helps buyers focus on the house, not the dog barking in the corner.

Sellers also ask about pet items in photos. Pet beds, crates, litter boxes, food bowls — all of it should be tucked away for pictures and showings. The goal is to help buyers picture their life there. A clean, open space helps them do that.

Does having indoor pets lower home value? Not automatically. What matters is the condition. Scratched doors, stained floors, or strong odors can hurt buyer perception. Small repairs and good cleaning go a long way.

Above all else, the best choice is an agent who understands how to market homes with pets the right way — especially in Louisiana’s climate. With smart prep and the right strategy, pet owners can still sell for top dollar.
